13 Diablo Canyon

The dramatic basalt cliffs of Diablo Canyon make this a popular hiking and climbing destination in the Santa Fe area. The hike does not follow a trail but a sandy arroyo, which takes you to the Rio Grande in beautiful White Rock Canyon. There is a free campground at the parking area; however, there are neither restrooms nor water.

Distance: 6.3 miles out and back

Ascent: 400 feet

Hiking time: About 3 hours

Difficulty: Moderate

Trail surface: Sandy arroyo

Best season: Winter, early spring, late fall

Other trail users: Climbers, equestrians, ATVs

Canine compatibility: Dogs permitted

Special considerations: This hike can be very hot in summer, and there is very little shade. If you choose to go at this time, leave very early in the morning, take lots of water and even a parasol. At any time of year, be aware of weather, as flash flooding does occur in this arroyo.
